5 Things About A Weekend With The Folks

My mum AND dad came to see me this weekend (lovely). They wanted to do 'silly London things'. I'm not sure we achieved that entirely, but we did pretty well. This is what we managed (I forgot to take pictures).

1) I discovered (thanks to Shona and Urban Junkies) a gorgeous little bar and restaurant just over the road from my flat in Brixton. It seems to be a house that someone decided to turn into a hip eating place. The door is very inconspicious, and you have to ring a buzzer to get in. The first floor is a bar, and the second floor is the restaurant. There was a great atmosphere, lovely food and very sweet staff, one of whom we bumped into on Acre Lane the following morning, who was very smiley and pleased to see us.

2) We went to the Political Cartoon Society on Store Street on Saturday to see an exhibition called 'Misunderestimating The President' which was (in case you hadn't worked it out) cartoons inspired by George Bush's stupidity. It was funny, but also rather disturbing, as it was very angry and reminded us of just what an insane mentalist he really is.

3) On the way back from the Political Cartoon Gallery, we happened upon the centre for New London Architecture, which had a huge model of London, showing all the new buildings planned for London, including the ' Cheese Grater all the Olympic planning, the Battersea Powerstation developements. It was fascinating, although I was a little disappointed that the model didn't quite reach to my house.

4) Yesterday evening we went to see Richard Galliano at the Barbican. He is an accordian player, and did a series of Latin style jazz and tango pieces. It was very engrossing, and got huge cheers and standing ovations, although it did rather go. I've never heard a concertina used so vigorously before.

5) And finally, today, we went to Horniman's Museum, in Forest Hill. We picked up Izzy, and spent an intruiging few hours looking at skull bones of Australopithecus remains. Which I only know anything about as I just reached that bit of Bill Bryson which is where I get most of my scientific knowledge.

All in all, it was an educational weekend, whether new cultural experiences, new eating experiences, or models of Dodos. This afternoon, however, the three of us have eaten two pizzas, a bag of Kettle Chips, two bars of Green & Blacks, drunk four bottles of wine and watched two movies. Tomorrow I start work in Brick Lane and am just trying to summon the energy to sort myself out and have an early night. Does it count as an early night if I sleep on the sofa?
